If nothing here fits the job, these are the closest alternatives — plus the reference pages people read before ordering.
Choosing a 40ft shipping container
A 40ft container gives you roughly twice the floor area of a 20ft for well under twice the price, which makes it the cheapest storage you can buy per square foot. A standard 40ft is 8ft 6in high and holds about 2,390 cubic feet; a 40ft high cube is 9ft 6in and holds about 2,694. If you are stacking pallets two high, lining the walls, or planning a conversion you will live or work in, take the high cube.
Specialist 40ft frames
Open tops come with a removable tarpaulin roof and are loaded from above by crane — the answer for cargo that will not go through a door. Collapsible flat racks have no sides or roof and fold flat when empty; they exist for out-of-gauge machinery. Multi-side-door units put two or four full-height doors along one side so you can reach the middle of the container without unloading the front. The raised bunded store sits on a 300mm steel bund with 48 vents, and is built for drummed chemicals and fuel rather than general storage.
Access is the thing that catches people out
A 40ft on a tilt-bed needs close to 100ft of straight, clear run to unload, plus room for the truck to turn in and out. If your access is tight, two 20ft containers placed end to end give you the same capacity and are far easier to deliver — and if you split the order, delivery is still one flat $500 charge per order.
