Flat pack containers explained

A flat-pack store is a steel building supplied as panels, a floor pan and a roof, delivered flat and assembled on site with hand tools. Two people can put a small one up in an afternoon. The reason to choose one over a shipping container is almost always access: if a delivery truck cannot get a rigid 20ft box to the spot, a pallet of panels usually can — through a gate, round the back of a building, or onto a roof terrace.

Sizes and how they link together

These units are made to metric sizes: 3m is about 9ft 10in, 4m about 13ft 1in, and the standard depth of 2.1m is about 6ft 11in. Two units can be joined with a linking kit — side-linked to make a wider, squarer footprint (3m × 4.2m or 4m × 4.2m), or end-linked to make a long run (6m × 2.1m from two 3m units, 8m × 2.1m from two 4m). That modularity means you can start with one and extend later rather than buying for the space you might need.

Galvanised or powder-coated

Galvanised units have a zinc coating over the steel and are the practical choice for a working yard. Powder-coated units add a colour finish over the top and are what you want when the store is somewhere people will look at it. There is also a 4m kiosk variant with a serving hatch for event and retail use. All units have a double-lock arrangement and lifting eyes, and delivery is a flat $500 per order.
